hi, i really need somebody’s help here…i’m frigtened now…i bought a copy of Photoshop CS like a month or so ago. but, i didn’t get around to installing it cos i got busy and so my uncle took it to india with him…i only got it back like 3 days ago and that’s through my grandparents paying us a visit (in australia)…

anyway, long story short, i tried to install it today – did that fine…i tried to activate it though and that it didn’t do fine…it said access denied or something…i am really really worried now cos i’m affraid i’m gonna get like arrested or something… 🙁
i’ve pinpointed the problem to the fact that my uncle has still got the program (and thus the serial) installed on his PC in india and so it’s not letting me but i’m really scared that because my activation access was denied, that i’m gonna get in huge trouble…

can somebody please help me out (i’m young if nobody noticed)? could you please also explain how this activation works (i.e. this denied activation doesn’t ring alarm bells at adobe does it…or is it just a feature that locks the software?)

thanks to all who reply in advance

Varun,

Your Uncle owes you the price of Photoshop CS. He has obviously installed and activated your copy on two machines already, which means your CD has become a coaster as far as installing it on any other machine is concerned.

Don’t worry about prosecution, though. No personal information was submitted to Adobe when you attempted to Activate.

Hopefully you will have learned a valuable (if expensive) lesson from this. NEVER ‘loan’ or give copies of software to ANYONE!

thank you VERY VERY MUCH len, you’re a legend
lol…i guess that means i am due for some pocket money from my uncle 😀

whew…so no prosecution…that’s good, VERY GOOD, you wouldn’t believe how worried i was, i was shaking!
then what is the purpose of the activation? i mean, do they get like you IP address or something, or does that count as personal info?

What is the purpose of the activation?

The purpose of activation is to make sure you only install it on one or two machines only; no more.

In the days of older versions, your uncle had the option of deciding to just uninstalled the software and turned the license over to you rather than have to pay you for the program. With the new and arguably flaky activation process, he might still be able to do that, but if it were possible,it would definately require a call to Adobe.

If he determines he doesn’t want to pay for the program but giving the money to you for another legit copy, he might want to contact Adobe and see what his options are.

Len is right though, never "lend" people your software. When you do, you are giving away your rights to use it.
