Strange printing problem

A friend called yesterday with a problem! A psd file in PS7 would not print to an Epson EX, whereas other files would and other programs would.
I told him to defrag the system drive (win98SE), and then uninstall and reinstall the printer. That made no difference, so I went to look for myself.

The file was 5"x7" about 450 ppi, no layers, but a white canvas border and a single stroke line outside that. As they said, it would not print; PS’s print dialog just sat there apparently refusing to send it to the printer and eventually had to be cancelled to close it. The printer dialog did not appear, and it did not appear in the printer’s list of jobs.

A similar file with a different image did print. Thinking it might be a corrupted header or something, I created a new empty file and dragged the image from the non-printing file to the new one. It still refused to print.

After much trial and error, I did get it to print, but only by cropping off the outer white border and part of the image. I did not have to take off much of the image, but taking off just the border was not sufficient.

I thought I was getting quite good at diagnosing and correcting other people’s problems, but this one has got me puzzled.

Any ideas from the experts out there?

Bob Frost.
