How should I proceed

First, never post an image here again. A picture is worth a thousand words – that’s about 5k, you nit. What you posted, to EVERY Usenet server in the world, is substantially more than that.

Post your image to your own web page, then post the LINK here.

Phil,

I took a look at the image you posted, and your right, it’s a mess. What happened to it? Was it some kind of camera/transfer screw
up?

But, you just might be able to salvage this image – or for sure at least some of it. The process will be a bit labor intensive, so just take your time, and perform each step with "pixel perfect" accuracy. What I would
do is use the Rectangular Marquee tool, and carefully select each of the individual (screwed up) rectangular sections (one at a
time) and then copy them all to their own layer. After you have the pieces "layerized", you can turn off the original pictures view
and then sequentially turn on each of the ‘piece" layers and then, using the move tool, I would position each one back to its proper
location. (Think of it as a Jigsaw Puzzle.) You may find, that the reason the image is screwed up in the first place is because some
of data got lost along the way between your camera and your computer. If this is the case, you will not be able to reconstruct the
whole image. Some gapes may become evident. But in looking at it, I feel certain that you will be able to make it look much better
than it does now! If you do find that gaps are present, you may be able to crop around them, or fill the gaps with some appropriate
art or text.

I will be interested in hearing how well you make out and seeing your results in a "before" and "after" fashion.

Good luck.

Hi,

many of my jpeg photos got distorted ( see sample appended). I would like to repair them.

How should I proceed ( the thumbnails are all OK – could it be only a header problem ?)

All suggestions wellcome !

Thanks and happy new year to all !

Well thanks !
As for the "how it happened", I do not know. All of them were OK on my hard drive. I then bought a new PC and saved all data on a network drive. I later recovered all data back to new PC’s data drive. But since all data seemed to be there ( correct number of files, sizes, ….) I deleted network data, and only later did find out that many ( almost 80 % ) of the jpegs I had were distorted in same way as the one you have seen ( only variation is number and positions/ sizes of the pieces, but always same principle). Also, none of tiff, bmp or gif files got corrupted ! Nor other file types ! I haven’t found any virus ( using NAV)
Anyway, I have a lot of work to recover them, as much as possible ( most are family events photos, hence not possible to get back !)
Now I have burned them all to DVDs, just for the case !
Thanks again.
Phil
