It seems I just plugged my Waco tablet into my (Win XP-Pro) computer and it worked when I first got it a couple of years ago. Now I’ve gotten used to the tablet in the studio which has all it’s mouse like controls working, I decided to load the proper driver and use it on my computer instead of the mouse… This is where the problem starts…

Downloaded the driver from Wacom and on attempting to install it, get the message there is already a pen driver installed, remove it first.

About 6 hours into this drama and discovery/removal of "hidden" device drivers… The same problem. I removed every registry entry for wacom and every device driver for everything I didn’t recognize as connected to the PC and it still won’t install.

Wacom are about as much help as tits on a bull with this. Maybe they think Australia is an abbreviation for too-hard-basket. Can anyone offer a suggestion please?

You might try the freeware program CCleaner to uninstall Tablet application. I went into the programs tools and located the Tablet program and uninstalled from there. While in the tools section, clicked on the Startup tool and located and deleted entry for TabUserW. Next I ran the Cleaner portion to clear pre-fetch, temp, etc files, then finished up with the registry cleaner. Can’t guarantee it will work for you, but it took care of my install problem. http://www.ccleaner.com/

To answer my own question…
There’s a "pendriver.exe" file which has to be deleted in order to install the genuine Wacom driver. Once installed the difference is chalk and cheese.
