What is the best Monitor for Photoshop work. Is the 21 inch Sony GDM-F520 still king? Is it that much better than the Sony 21 inch CPD-G520 which is half the cost? The only difference that I can see is that the F520 has a dot pitch of .22 versus .24 for the G520. Does that really make that big of a differnce?

What about the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070? How does it compare to the Sonys?

Are there any advantages to the wdescreen monitor from Sony for Photoshop work (GDM-FW900)? What about the variable dt pitch from .23 in the center to .26 at the edges. Will this result in the photos looking distorted?

I read somewhere during my research that Sony will halt their production of CRT’s next year. What effect should this have on a customer (less availablility of parts and service, prices will begin to fall)

Finally, should I be considering any LCD monitors? Are any close to the CRT’s in terms of color fidelity and sharpness? IF so, what are the models? Or should I just wait six months so that the LCD technology can catch-up or surpass the CRT technology? Cost is not a primnary consideration,

Regarding LCD’s: I have noticed mine is getting more darker (luminance) over the past 1 1/2 years. It is one of the high-brightness models and now is dim enough that it cannot be used in a bright room. New lamp = new LCD basically. Used to be so bright it hurt your eyes and needed to be turned down. I don’t know if Adobe has addressed the Adobe Gamma issue of working with LCD displays in the newest (CS-8) version.

Fwiw, a friend’s plasma has a nice etched-in image on the lower right of the screen from some bright thing that was there for too long. He’s not happy about it and no where was it mentioned that it could happen.

They still have a ways to go, imho.

Brighter tube. Wider color gamut. Better supporting components.

Sony’s bean counters have gotten the best of their company in the past few years.

I had the Sony G520, good monitor.
I got a Formac Gallery 2010, one of the best LCD’s there is. Had it for a week, returned it. It had fantastic sharpness, but I could never get the color correct for critical work.
Finally I got an Eizo T965, the best monitor I’ve ever seen. Sharpness, geometry, contrast, color, adjustments, everything is as perfect as a monitor can be.

While we’re discussing monitors, has anyone used the Sony Artisan? Does it offer any advantages with its self-calibration?

Hell no. In fact, if I were you I would avoid buying ANYTHING from Sony, be it a monitor, a stereo, a computer, or anything else. They have been experiencing some sever quality control issues in recent years, and IMO all they manage to turn out anymore is crap. Steaming piles of crap. The only reason they maintain their market share is the sheer brute force of their brand name.

But that’s just my view – I know plenty of people who still swear by them for all manner of product; all I know is they’re not getting another penny of mine until things improve DRAMATICALLY. I’ve already wasted enough on them

Is the Sony Artisian just the CPD-G520 ($799) with color calibration? Is the Artisian Color Calibration worth the extra $800.

Here’s a review and description …

If the monitor gives results only slightly better than a basic 21" monitor calibrated with ColorVision or similar and the results loaded via the video card then probably not.

If it means the monitor give results only slightly less accurate than a $5,000 monitor like the Barco then it’s a great deal.

I asked about it hoping someone in the NG plugged in to a rigorous ICM workflow had actually used it and compared the results with a calibrated simpler monitor.
