creating an interactive graphic with imageready

Hello.
Does anyone know whether or not, and how, it’s possible to create a kind of interactive graphic that involves clicking on specified locations in the graphic and updating parts of the graphic based on those events?
I know it’s possible to update rectangular areas of the graphic, but is it also possible to use a kind of image map to specify non- rectangular areas of the graphic that are supposed to be modified? So what I want is to update areas in the graphic that are not shaped in rectangular form, based on clicking in certain locations, while preserving the graphic in the area around these non-rectangular shapes.
Imagine a tetrahedron for instance where edges are arrows (represented
by color transitions) and being able to click in certain locations in the graphic in order to reverse the direction of the individual arrows.

I’ve already tried out making such an interactive graphic and a preliminary test result can be found here:

As can be seen, it doesn’t function properly yet. The first two squares on both sides of the diagonal can be clicked to flip certain edges, but the graphic is not properly updated yet (updating one edge should leave the other edges unaltered).

Am I trying something here that is simply impossible with imageready or is there a way to make it work properly?

I’m using the version of imageready that comes with CS2, but if it’s not possible with that version, I’d also be interested in hearing whether or not it’s possible with the version of imageready that comes
with CS3.

It’s not supposed to be a game… more like an interactive graphic to illustrate
a mathematical principle.

Here is a better preliminary test version, but it isn’t exactly how I’d like it to work (since I’d prefer the ability to click in the square with colors to flip edges).
