I’m registered for an online computer imagery class that will require Photoshop CS. My current computer is an HP Pavilion running an Intel Celeron ~702 Mhz processor with 64MB RAM memory. I know Photoshop CS is highly unlikely to run on this machine. What is the minimum processor speed and memory amount Photoshop CS needs? I keep seeing Pentium 4 mentioned as required–does that mean it won’t run on a Celeron or an AMD Athlon processor? The Pentium 4-equipped computers are too expensive.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you in advance.

our local pc richards has compaqs going for 399 with a monitor and printer. p4 celeron 2.4, 256 meg ram and a 40 gig hd with cd-rw. i’m thinking of getting one for the kids. beats the heck out of a game cube.

the p4 isn’t a requirement, some have been running p3’s but the 64 meg is gonna kill you. windows XP or 2000 (sp2 minimum) IS a hard requirement.

I agree with Dave. First, you have to be running XP or you can’t use PSCS, period.

Second, you’d run fine on that machine except for the RAM. It’ll run on AMD and Celeron as well.

Here are Photoshop CS System Requirements <http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/systemreqs.html>.

(or windows 2000 sp2 or better)

Thanks dave and YrbkMgr. I checked the Photoshop CS system requirements hyperlinked above and see where an Intel Pentium III or 4 processor is required. No speed is listed, though. I was concerned that maybe the Celeron chips were like the old 486SX chip sets (which did not have a functioning math coprocessor, and some programs would not run without a math coprocessor).

About a year and half ago, I tried to upgrade the memory on my Pavilion without success. An aftermarket memory module from Office Depot kept giving me memory errors despite my reinstalling it several times. At that time, HP had changed the speed in the memory modules they sold online, so those would not work (at least that is what their tech support told me). Finally I tried purchasing more memory from HP’s OEM parts replacement department–they never returned my emails or phone calls. I just kept the machine as it was with Windows ME (Windows XP kept crashing) since all my programs at the time (including Illustrator 10) worked ok with ME.

What minimum processor speed do I need to look for in order to run Photoshop CS? YrbkMgr, you said my 702 Mhz Celeron processor could run Photoshop CS? So as long as I meet that processor speed in a Celeron or AMD and have the 192MB RAM and XP I will be ok?

Thanks again for the advice–it helped me a lot.

Yes.

I have an AMD 700MHz with 256 RAM. I’m running Win98 so I can’t use PSCS, but if I put XP (or 2000 as Dave points out) on this machine, PSCS will run. It won’t be fast enough for my taste, but it will run.

If you’re on a budget, get XP or 2000, and bump up your RAM (hint: go 256 if you can) – if you’re replacing it yourself, the following links may be helpful:
