I installed the Photoshop CS upgrade about 6 weeks ago. Previous I had been using Photoshop 7.0.1. I am running Windows XP SP1 on a Micron Millennia with 1.0 Ghz, 256 RAM and a 40GB HD which has about 20 GB free and 256 NVidia graphics card.

CS worked just fine since I installed it on June 29 (although very slow load time) until just two days ago, when it hangs on startup, just a gray screen and spinning hourglass. I did manage to get it to work by going into documents and settings/myuser/application data/Adobe/8.0 and reinitializing it by deleting all the files in the "Photoshop CS Preferences" folder. This unfortunately deletes all my settings and preferences, but at least Photoshop will run.

Unfortunately it is very frustrating to go through this EVERY TIME I want to use Photoshop unless I leave it on 24/7.

I had a similar problem starting 7.0.1 which would hang after displaying the startup screen.

I have run defrag, spybot and ad-aware. Now I’m at my wit’s end!

are you shutting down the system while photoshop is running? don’t do that, you’ll corrupt the prefrences. exit ps manually before shutting down.
