How do I create a transparent layer from a PNG with a Transparent layer?

I have a graphic that will be printed on a banner. The background in the graphic is transparent. The printer will only accept in jpeg or photoshop format. I created it in gimpshop.

When I open it up in photoshop I do see that checkerboard pattern in the background. But will that translate to transparent when they print it?

Do I need to separate it with another layer in photoshop. If so, how do I create a transparent layer that won’t print.

Thanks for your help.

Yes.

Seeing as the JPEG format does not in any way support transparancy your choices are further limited to the one format you say they accept that does support transparancy.

Jpeg can’t be transparent. Psd can. Save your transparent png as psd.

Not sure what "transparent layer that won’t print." means. Unless there is a hole in the paper, there is no transparency when printing. Or are you printing on a transparent medium, like clear plastic? Is there something underneath it that needs to show?

I would go shoot myself if there is any printer won’t accept JPEG. I have never run into one, never heard of it, and I just can’t believe that any printer with built-in format detector to detect the difference between JPEG from all formats.

Transparency means Blank, None, Emptied etc.. so there is no data for the printer to print. If you ask what color may show on paper, then the answer is it will be whatever the color of the paper.

Do I need to separate it with another layer in photoshop. If so, how do I create a transparent layer that won’t print.

I would suggest to try first then ask question later. If it’s big then try a small one, if you don’t have any small transparent image to print then you can always try whatever side you now have but tell the printer (program) to print at small image (to save ink).

IOW, you get the transparent image, you get the printer, you get the program, you get the chance to try yourself… and you will get the answer right after you tell the program to print.

Thanks for your help.
