pen tool for selection

I am using Photoshop cs and I want to draw a section over a photo that I want to use the unsharp mask tool on. I remember being able to draw it back in Photoshop 6 and the choosing make selection and able to do it that way but that doesn’t seem to work in CS I would also use this technique to draw masks any help would be greatly appreciated.

Click on the pen tool, in the options bar, make sure that PATH is selected. You will then be able to draw with the pen tool, and then add/delete anchor points and modify your drawing. In the Paths Palette, you can then select that path (button at the bottom of the palette), and if you like, then save that as an alpha channel.
