I have seen lots of post descibing the benefits of converting from a cameras raw file to DNG. My question is: Do you still need sidecar files when you are using DNG. I ask this because I have started using Lightroom, and Photoshop CS2, and Cs3 beta. I also copy files from work to home on and external drive and vice versa. I also was using Extensis Portfolio as my cataloging program. But sometimes remebering to copt the sidecar files, and the fact that Portfolio does not support them when it imports; is a big hassle.

So will DNG hold the metadata and other settings inside the file, or does it also need the sidecar file?. If not, Is there any way of combining the that data, and the photo in one file?

Thanks in advance

The DNG file holds the data that would otherwise be in the XMP sidecar file.

In fact, you could have a look for yourself. You can open the DNG file with a text processor (Word will do!) and you will see the XMP near the start of it. You could then compare this with an XMP sidecar file, which is a text file.
