Hi all,

Can anyone advise on a problem that I am having with resizing layers that have masks associated with them…

I have an image made up of many layers and I need to re-size the image on one layer to merge into another layer. The image has a carefully matched mask associated with it so that only the parts I want are seen through other layers.

To resize the image I am selecting the subject (basically everything that is visible on the layer), and using a freeform transformation on the selection to resize it, but only the image part of the layer (or if selected, the mask part) will resize. I then have to select the other part and try to re-size it to match the first change. The mask and image are linked together, such that when I move the layer the mask also moves with it, and I anticipated that this would also happen when resizing it, but it apparently does not for selections. It is being carried out in Photoshop CS2

Am I using the correct tool for resizing the layer or is there a better method that will do what I need?

Is there a way of linking the subject with its mask for re-sizing using a freeform transformation on a selection that I have missed?

Failing these possibilities, are there any (preferably free) tools or plugins that will do what I need, or any suggestions/tips for doing this without having to re-mask or line up the mask again?
Many thanks

Don’t do that. Just use Transform; you don’t need to have a selection. Making a selection isolates the layer from the mask.

Also, be aware that Ctrl-Shift-T (Transform again) will apply the same transform to a second object or selection.

You are absolutely right – I knew I was missing something obvious! —

IN CS if you click between the thumbnails of the image and the mask it will link them together withthe little infinity symbol

Have you ever looked into what Shift-Ctrl-Alt-T does? It’s like Step and Repeat. Very cool.
