I am using a computer with Windows XP installed, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD, 3 partitions, 1 each for OS, programs, and everything else. I had a version of PS (7) running on the machine fine until a few months ago. I moved and set the computer up again, and after doing so, strangely, PS will go to dialog boxes but will not open or create any new files. I can do whatever I want trying to get files to open, but none ever do. No error messages display. The dialog boxes just shut and besides that, nothing happens. I tried uninstalling the software completely and then reinstalling, but the problem persists! Does anyone have any advice to give as to how I might resolve this problem, things I might try? AFAIK restoring factory defaults won’t help–what I have now ARE the defaults.

Thanks!

~Gary

Gary,

Uninstalling Photoshop doesn’t delete the prefereces file. This file is created upon first launch, thus the Install Shield has no record of it.

Delete it manually. Details in the FAQ on top of this forum.

Search for a *.PSP file that has preferences in it’s name.

I think the weird bhaviour is then over.

I just realized I made a mistake in stating the problem…initially I had PS4 running, and was going to install 7 when the problem occurred. I uninstalled 4 and installed 7 (I understand the prefs file is a bit different with 4…searched for the .ini file as well as the .psp from 7, no dice).

That said, upon deleting the prefs as you suggested, I had the exact same problem. On some larger files it actually appears as though the computer is working to bring me the image–the hourglass appears after the dialog box disappears–but then, nothing. Funnily, Adobe ImageReady, the companion program with 7, displays images just fine (?).

Any other options?

Thanks,

~Gary

Okay, let’s work through this – I’m confused, so bear with me.

PS will go to dialog boxes but will not open or create any new files

What exactly does that mean? You are doing File|Open, or File|New. Then what happens? Exactly.

Also, have you tried drag-n-dropping a file onto open Photoshop?

When deleting preferences, follow the procedure in the FAQ. If you are not set to show hidden files, you may not find the PSP via traditional means.

Okay, I found out what was wrong, just so everyone stops trying to help. It wasn’t a PS problem, it was a keyboard problem–when I packed the thing up, somehow the Esc key got broken/stuck. Me dumb, don’t ask.:-/

Thanks anyway, fellas,
