I am not a user of Photoshop but would like to know what the difference is between Photoshop and Image Ready. They seem to be so alike but come packaged together.
Would somebody kindly explain the differences please?

Photoshop is for photo retouching, professional print graphics and the like. ImageReady is for doing web work. You can make animations, rollovers and such in IR. You can also do a whole web page, but you would be better off doing that kind of thing in a real HTML editor like DreamWeaver or GoLive.
