a pharmacist friend who very often see me walking with a camera bag slung over my shoulder, wrongly guessed me to be clever enough to shed light on his questions. I said I’ll ask over here and this is what he asked:

He had a 15 year old Minolta X700SLR and lost it somehow. His assurance replaced it with a Sony Alpha – 100 DSLR and he loves it.

Somebody said to him the lenses are compatible and he still is in possession of wide-angle lens, zoom lens and telephoto lens.

He had 3 questions of which the first was whether
there is adapter rings in existence to make it fit

2nd was whether he can sell it (and I said ebay)

and 3rd was if I had any other alternatives, and added to it he can not afford 5 to 10k for a camera.

Maybe all this make only the 1st question valid

If he loves the replacement camer – why would he sell it?

-=IF=- it’s to use/get the different lenses, then -=if=- his local (or an internet) camera store proves that they don’t fit and there are no adapter mounts available, then sell off the lenses and get ones that fit.

Surely that won’t be 5-10K!

For more/better help ask in a digital camera (hardware) group.

You are very right. In fact, he’s employed in a large mall in Johannesburg where he can walk into any camera shop armed with the lenses and his new Sony, and see if they can find a adapter ring.

It became Saturday a few minutes ago, so I’ll see you’s later today. Thank for your reply.

Most insurances will insure your camara gears and you are free to lose as many as you wish. Just start with you car or home insurance, and try to burn down your house with camera inside <bg>

most (all I guess) insurance companies have a add-on which is called something to the effect of ‘all risks’. This is what the biggest short term insurer in south Africa calls it, and others alter the term but it comes to the same; and if you added it, that is what pays out for the groceries in the boot after the car insurance paid out if the car is stolen. You can make it ‘specified all risks’ and then add specific items *taken away from your house/risk address*.

tip:
What do you do if arriving at the spot where you left your car just in time to see a thief driving off with it?

Write down the registration number of course, you stupid

I don’t know of any insurance (in this country) that will pay out because" I lost it". Theft, yes. Destruction due to fire, accident etc, OK . But "I lost it" , No way.

in France many will do. But they cost each year the price of an Alpha! Just for the camera….
and you can claim for only once a year.
I do prefer buy a new camera.

You are totally wrong.
I am South African, thus of course I am speaking of South Africa. If nobody will pay for negligence like losing it, you are living in a stupid country. That is the reason why we emigrated as Huguenots from France to South Africa some 300 years ago – could not get along with the assurance companies. . If you pay a premium for assurance, you are not only paying to cover your neighbours mistakes but also your own.

As someone retired from the industry, but an engineer employed by them, not a ‘bookie in a suit’ –

Assurance = you are betting something does NOT happen. ie you don’t die in the next 25years – life assurance. You survive they pay.

Note in the policy terms there may be a secondary insurance policy if you do die to pay the bills. Sort of each way bet.

Insurance = you are betting on something does happen, ie Car insurance. You have a smash they pay.

But some people here might want to know what happen outside their own land particularly what’s in the the old world, and maybe South Africans and even Americans want to know too 😉 .

Yes, well as a Serth Efriken AND a Huguenot, you would have some detailed knowledge of stupid countries.

I have just contacted my insurance company and let them know that I have parked my car and forgotten where it is – I just can’t remember – it is lost. I have asked them to send me a new one, preferably a 5 series BMW.

I will let you know how it all goes.
