I have my crop tool set for an 8×10 crop, but when I crop the image, the image size is off in the width,it is 7.998.Is there anything you can adjust to make a perfect 8×10?

Internally, PS images are measured in pixels. You can’t cut a pixel in half so what you wind up with when you use other measurements they are slightly off. I wouldn’t worry about 2/1000ths of an inch.

Fwiw, when you Crop an image using the crop tool, if you enter values in the options bar your image will be resampled, using whatever defaults are in your Image|Image Size… dialog box. If you don’t want the image resampled, you are better off using the Rectangular Marquee tool, setting it to Fixed in the options bar and use values for that tool instead. Once the marquee is drawn, you can just do Image|Image Crop and your image won’t be resampled.

Just a thought…

Correct me if I’m wrong, Tony, but if you enter only size values and leave the resolution box blank in the options bar for crop, no resampling takes place.

No, it changes the resolution of your image whether you specify a resolution or not. Using the Marquee/Crop Image method doesn’t. If you do not specify a value for width and height, leaving resolution blank, the resolution does not change.

I wasn’t stating that it doesn’t change the resolution. The way it works for me in PS7 is this:

If I specify dimensions but leave resolution blank, the crop tool will alter resolution as necessary precisely to avoid resampling.

I find the crop tool very useful for many resizing operations, especially because I can enter size in non-default units (e.g., pixels when my default ruler is in inches) and, when I want to do so, resize with resample in one operation.

Okay Harron, you have me confused. First, I’m no authority on it, so let’s start there <smile>.

Here’s where I’m confused.

If I specify dimensions but leave resolution blank, the crop tool will alter resolution as necessary precisely to avoid resampling.

Followed by:

because I can enter size in non-default units … when I want to do so, resize with resample in one operation.

Playing with it just now, it appears that if you don’t enter a resolution, yet enter dimensions, it is the equivalent of Image|Image Size, without having resample checked.

If that’s the case, I was wrong, the image isn’t re-sampled, but its resolution is changed. Yet if you specify nothing in the options bar, the resolution does not change, it’s a simple crop.

Peace,
Tony

Tony,

Sorry to have caused confusion.

I was talking only about resampling in the first instance, but then trying to explain why I like the crop tool so much in the second (because it is a convenient way to resample/resize when that is what one wants to do).

I’m glad our Photoshops are working the same way. I was starting to get worried. I briefly contemplated deleting prefs and entering therapy.

By the way, I think there are some differences between the crop tool options in recent versions.

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong.
