I’m not sure what the question really is, but consider this.
There has been an issue with PS6/7 (don’t know if it happens in CS) that users get that error message. It is unreproducable by Adobe, and in fact, there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason for users.
What *I* have found, is that if you close all open images in photoshop except for the one you’re trying to save, you can save your image without the error message.
Does it make sense? No. Does it work? Yes.
Just yesterday it happened to me again, and I NEEDED to save two of the open images. Luckily I was able to copy one of them into clipboard, close it, save the other image, close it, then File|New, followed by Paste, and then save that one.

Marie, Do you have psicon.dll installed? I have had much less trouble (like your problem) since I uninstalled it. Actually, I placed a ~ infront of it. That may not be what is causing your problem but I just thought I’d mention it.
Also make sure that no viewing programs such as Thumbs Plus, ACDSee or Windows Picture & Fax viewer are open in the background and displaying info on that file. This can sometimes also happen under certain conditions if you use those programs to launch the file into PS.

And, Q Photo–yes, I found that .dll in Search. What program do I open it with so the ~ can be inserted? And Fred, (HI!) no other programs are running.
I haven’t tried copying the file to the clipboard–but even so, don’t you end up saving it to a new file with a new name anyway?

A long shot, but I’ve been driven nuts by weird things happening along these lines in the past – try a diagnostic startup: Start>Run, then type in:> msconfig then hit OK, then highlight the diagnostic start button (but make a record of which programs are checked in the "startup" tab first so you can restore your startup programs later), reboot & see if PS still does this.
If it doesn’t (again, its a long shot), try to find the culprit background program by successively enabling the disabled programs in the Startup tab of msconfig and seeing when PS starts behaving strangely again. I’m suspecting something is latching on to your image files because PS surely does not behave like this for me or most other people.

THanks Fred. I’ll give that a try. Not having done a "diagnostic" before, it seems you are suggesting that the Startup enabled programs are removed and then must be rechecked again?

Here’s another long shot, from someone who hasn’t had the problem:
When you run into this problem…try making a duplicate image:
Window—»Documents—»New Window…
Try saving the duplicate.
Worth a try, I suppose.
Phosphor: Hm-m. Actually, I always "duplicate" an image before I work on it, and have had that problem. Opening a new window and then moving the image to it is about the same thing, isn’t it?
Fred: Yeah gads! I tried the diagnostic startup and when I looked at the startup items, EVERY single one had been checked. I checked only the ones I knew I needed: monitor stuff, Adobe Gamma, Norton’s and Tablet. THere is so much Microsoft stuff there that I have no idea what would be safe to undo. When I tried out some work, the printers were off and inspite of having the Tablet.exe checked, the pen wouldn’t work.
I set it back to its awful normal. I think I’ll have to work that going backwards by taking off 1 item at a time and trying stuff out. That will be a long process but I’ll stay with it.

All you need to do with psicon.dll is find it on your computer and left click the file name and pick rename and just ADD the ~ at start of file name. This way it is on your computer, not deleted. But Photoshop wont find it because it has been renamed. If you want to use it again simply rename again by getting rid of ~.

Diagnostic will do that – it takes everything peripheral out and so gives you a clue as to whether anything there is causing a problem. In the past I’ve done this and, whilst not always identifying the problem I was chasing, it has sometimes alerted me to problems I wasn’t aware I was having (mainly to do with things hanging or being slow).
Did you try to run PS whilst in diagnostic startup mode at all, and if so did the problem go away? I realize it makes things a disaster area when in use, but it’s best to persevere.
You can speed things up by disabling the first half – if the problem persists, then it is in the second half. Then disable half of those, same deal, then half of the remaining etc etc.
