I have PhotoShop CS installed on both my work machine and home machine. My work machine allows me to save edited raw files as jpegs when I’m through. My home machines doesn’t (it isn’t even offered as an option when saving) this is driving me crazy! Can anyone suggest a solution or tell me what I am doing wron?

Thanks very much in advance.

Dave

Make sure your images are in 24bit mode when trying to save as JPG.

My first guess would be that your home machine Camera RAW is set to 16-bit.

My first thought is that you shouldn’t be saving your edited RAW files ONLY as jpgs! I hope that you are saving a version of your edited file as a .psd first and then as a .jpg second?

I think that DS Nelson is suggesting that you should check the image mode when you try to save as a .jpg and see if it’s in 16 bit or 8 bit mode. If it’s in 16, drop it down to 8 and see if that allows for the .jpg saves.

DS Nelson/Grass Hopper – yep, that was it thank you so much. Whew!

Grasshopper- I’m new to CS and raw files (recently picked up a Nikon D100). I always leave the orignal raw file pristine (so I always have access to the original raw)file. Why is it I should save a pic as a .PSD first?

Thanks again.

..psd, .tif or the NEF files are "lossless" file types. This means you can save and resave without fear of degrading the image.

..jpg is a "lossy" file type, which means you will get degredattion of image quality each and every time you save the image.

Your best bet is to save an edited version as a .psd or .tif (since only the camera can save as the NEF file type) and then save as a smaller file size of the jpg file type.

I have the Nikon D70 and I like to save my original NEF images, the converted images (I use Nikon Capture for conversions) as tif, edits in PSCS will be be saved as .psd (in case I have layers, text, styles etc) and the final output to friends or web will be in .jpg.
