I am a newbie to photoshop. Recently I installed a 30 day trial version which I got through a computer publication’s DVD. My OS is Windows XP (Home).
I have been using for ages Paint Shop Pro and I have also Photoshop Element and wanted to give Photoshop CS a try.

I load a normal size picture (600X400) in jpg format. Ensure the format is RGB, 8bit. Duplicate the background so as to work on this new layer.

I choose a filter ( eg Dry Brush). The appropriate panel open so I can experiment with different settings, on the preview panel, I can see the results then I press the "OK"…nothing happens to my layer which remains unchanged!!!
I tried all filters… same outcome except: Facets, sharp, blur and the custom filter!!! I tried saving the original picture in Photoshop’s own format, reload: same outcome. I have looked in FAQ… tried reloading the software having eliminated the preference file…. No change…

In both Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop Element, the filters are working fine!

Can anybody give me a clue????

Thanks in advance

Paddy

Are you sure you duplicated the layer? Not added a new layer (which could be transparent?

The filter must have been applied to something you don’t see, since you didn’t get an error message.

Could you try a filter on the Background layer (I mean for the troubleshooting; normally you would work on layers, as you already did).

A mistake I regularly make is to leave a tiny selection (often after a healing patch) and then don’t see any filtering result, because it’s applied to the selection only and I overlook it.

Thanks for the reply.
No, for sure it is a duplicate layer, tried duplication by simply right click on the background and also using menu..
No selection tool were used.
When I select a filter, the process goes smoothly, ie a new window opens, giving the choice of filter and when I select one… the preview window shows me the result. However, when I click "OK".. the windows closes but the selected layer shows no changes.
To make sure, I turn off all other layers, but in these case, it was always the top layer that I used to try the filters.
I did try also on the background layer… no changes…
As said in my previous message.. the only filter which works is "facets" and the "custom" filter where one can play with pixel settings.

All the filters I have are the one installed originally from the Adobe software.

I thought that I had heard that most of the filters are disabled in the Trial Version until you buy it, then the key turns them on. I was going to say that when I first saw this post, but wasn’t sure. Now that Paddy mentions that Facets works and most of the others don’t, that’d be my suspicion.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Peace,
Tony

well, well….time for the drastic move!!…
In photoshop CS, the plug-in for effect is a compiled of all effects into "Filter Gallery.8df" whereas in Photoshop Element 2, all effects are store individually… so I removed the "Filter Gallery.8df" from the directory and replaced by the collections of plug-ins from Photoshop Element 2… and BINGO!! all my filters work in Photoshop CS!!!

So it seems the culprit is the "Filter Gallery.8bf" which seems to be corrupted… now to continue to evaluate my 30 days trial of Photoshop CS I am forced to use the plug-ins from Photoshop Element 2…. So much for an evaluation and I don’t ask me to download another version of Photoshop CS for evaluation (150 odd MB of download, not having broadband is a pain!!)
My version of Photoshop CS evaluation came with the April 2004 issue of "The official WindowsXP Magazine".

So any idea out there??.. Was the "filter Gallery.8bf" file corrupted?

Had you tried deleting the Photoshop preferences? Reinstalling the tryout from the disk? While the PSE 2 plugins work fine (they are Photoshop plugins after all), you aren’t really getting the full benefit of the tyrout without the new filter gallery.

Reinstalling the tryout from the disk?

Stephanie,

Paddy has downloaded the 150+ MB file on dialup. That doesn’t mean a disc can’t be burned, but it’s not presently on disc. Just wanted to point that out.

Peace,
Tony

Dear Stephanie and Tony,

Thanks for your answers.
I did try deleting the preference file initially but without any success. The trial out version came on a magazine DVD, so I have a "hard copy" of the installation program ( which is "Time/date locked"… I have about 23 days left!!!).
My reference to download a 150 MB was merely as another option which I did not relish at all…LOL What I thought I could do was to download only the actual "filter gallery" (3872 KB) file so to try a "fresh" one with the existing installation..
