What next? Unless I click on the dumb Icon in any of my directory folders to open the image in PS, I can’t see what it is I’m opening. "List" is fine, "Icon" is fine, but all I see for "Tiles" or "Thumnails" is a different sized Icon.

Everything was fine yesterday. I hope Ad-Aware or Spybot didn’t take something away when I ran checks yesterday. If anyone has ideas on how to get images in place of Icons I’d SURE appreciate it!!! Help and thanks…MM

That’s the price of renaming/deleting the PSICON.DLL which I believe you used to try and eliminate the problem of "this file is in use" in your other thread.

Since that particular problem happens infrequently, and there is a "manual" way around it (as I posted) that’s why I didn’t delete the PSICONS.DLL on my system.

Er… I think <grin>

Peace,
Tony

WHEW! At least that’s a "manageable problem"—I hope. So OK, now, what’s the work-a-round Tony, please, before I kick in my computer………..mm

Okay, I’m sorry, I probably wasn’t clear enough.

Here’s the situation. Sometimes in Photoshop, you get an inane message telling you that you can’t save a file because that file is already in use by another program. But of course, it isn’t.

I have found that it ONLY happens when there are multiple images open in Photoshop. It doesn’t always happen (which is why Adobe cannot reproduce it), but when it does happen, multiple images are open.

At some point, some of the really bright contributors to the forum found that by deleting or renaming the PSICONS.DLL, the problem doesn’t seem to occur. The theory of why is irrelevant for this discussion, but the fact is, that once you delete or rename this file, you lose either the icon or the thumbnail (I can’t remember which).

Me, I chose not to use that strategy because everytime this anomaly has occurred, I have been able to solve it by closing all open images in Photoshop, except the one I’m trying to save.

So that was my suggested workaround in your other thread.

Having said that, I should point out that my understanding of the result of deleting/renaming the PSICONS.DLL was that you would simply lose the little Photoshop Icon that showed that a PSD file was, in fact, associated with Photoshop. But if you have thumbnails in Explorer turned on, and are not seeing the thumbnail any longer, that could be the reason.

Further, if you are satisfied with having renamed/deleted the PSICONS.DLL, you can always use the File Browser within Photoshop, or the File|Open dialog box and you should get a preview of the image, instead of using Windows Explorer.

That’s all I was trying to allude to…

Peace,
Tony

I don’t have a Dumb icon. Sometimes I wish I did… 🙂 Or a "Do Stuff" button. 😉

Marie, and ATTENTION DAVE MILBUT

This is why I recommended placing a ~ in front of the file name to rename it (In your other thread). This is much better than deleting the file. Just go back, RIGHT click file name and rename “psicon.dll” without the ~. Restart computer as recommended by others here and you will have your previews back. You can rely on information from Dave Milbut and YrbkMgr (Tony). They are wise people.

By the way, if you do as recommended above and have the same problem about not being able to empty recycle bin don’t worry too much about. The files that you can’t delete today you will be able to in a day or two. At least that is how it worked for me for the last year.

My recent strategy has been this: I did the ~ thing and purchased ACDsee for their file browser. This has worked well for me, at least to this point.

ATTENTION DAVE MILBUT, I have read your complaints about not being able to use Photoshop Browser out side of window. While I never thought of it as a problem I do understand your view. I now have ACDSee on second monitor and it is under Photoshop until I cycle thru the application keys and bring it to forefront. I then click and drag the file into Photoshop which is spread across both monitors. This works very well and I now see your reasoning. One important point. In Photoshop preferences I had to check MAXIMIZE PSD FILE COMPATIBILITY (ALWAYS) to get ACDSee to recognize psd files.

interesting. i haven’t reloaded acdsee since a reformat, but then i don’t have gigs of pic coming in a week so i don’t have a lot of the problems with slowdowns that some of the pros see with the browser. nice tip though.

Q Photo,

You can rely on information from Dave Milbut and YrbkMgr (Tony). They are wise people.

I’m not sure you’re right where I’m concerned, but I’m grateful for the sentiment.

YrbkMgr: I meant that you are wise compared to myself. If you knew me personally you would not think it a big compliment…Peace.

Dave M: I don’t actually have a complaint about Photoshop browser and for some things I use it a lot. There are just a few things that ACDSee seems to handle better, like deleting and/or moving files & folders.

Back to being wise. My mom always said two heads are better than one… Even if they’re both cabbage heads.
