CS – Opening Files Problem

I’m checking through large numbers of TIFF files and last night in CS (Windows 2000) I received the "Could not complete your request because of a program error" when trying to open a file. I only work on one file at a time.

I initially thought that the file was corrupt, but the same message came up with files that I had just been working on. I then checked the files out in Photoshop 6 on the same computer and then in CS on another computer – they opened without any problems.

Restarts and throwing out the preference file have not yielded any results. I also tried opening the file in CS’s Browser – it would bring up the thumbnail successfully, but no further than this.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I reinstall it.

Cheers,

Tom

Tom,

Unlike most Windows programs, a reinstall of Photoshop is relatively benign. It doesn’t replace/reset preferences, so I wouldn’t hesitate at all to reinstall.

Here are some of my thoughts on your issue.

Basically, it’s a "is it the file or the program?" issue.

Is it possible that there is corrupt EXIF (or other) data that PS 6 ignores? Possible. I don’t know where your images came from (camera?) so only you can evaluate the liklihood.

So what to do? Me, I’d first see if I can create a brand new image in PS CS, save it, close it, and see if it opens. If not, you’re almost certainly looking at an application conflict type issue.

But if you can, then try opening the images in either Photoshop 6 or Image Ready, and re-save them in their current file format, and try again. Still crashing?

Also, does it happen for ANY image type, or only a specific file type?

Just some things to think about if you can’t resolve the issue.

Peace,
Tony

These are images that have been created on an Epson 1640xl scanner, so there should be no EXIF issues. The strange thing about it was that everything was running smoothly and then the problem just started.

Anyway, I tried creating a brand new image, saving it and then reopening, so I guess it is an application conflict issue. It happens to both TIFFs and JPEGs, so it looks like it is time for a reinstall.

Thanks for your help Tony.

Cheers,

Tom
