My Crop tool’s suddenly gone wrong. It won’t allow me to select an irregular rectangle, but insists I can only have a dotted lined rectangle of fixed proportions. Can’t fathom out how to get it back to normal. Did I accidentally click something?

(Reinstalling is not an option – I’m in a controlled IT environment – they have the control!)

Yes you did!

In the Crop tool bar at the top of the screen, click on Clear. This will remove the fixed proportions that you have entered.
(If you are using an older version of PS with no Clear button, just remove the dimensions that you selected.)

You have entered a fixed dimension in the tool bar, just press "erase" and it will go

Check the settings in the settings bar. You probably filled in a fixed width there.

Thanks all – I’ll check it out back at work tomorrow. Don’t remember putting any dimensions in, but heyho – another senior moment. (I can’t access NGs from work either – one of the joys of working in a pharmaceutical plant :))

Note for the future: Reinstalling usually wouldn’t fix a problem like this (if there really had been a problem here). Look into Trashing/Resetting Preferences, which you CAN do and fixes a lot of problems when weird things start happening)
