Hello,

I know that repeated cycles of opening a jpeg file, editing, saving and closing etc etc results in loss of detail/information in the file. However, can anyone tell me whether this is also the case if you are keeping the file open; merely saving it every now and then?

Yes. But it is only the Saving which causes the degradation.

There is a slight loss because you always resave *once* this way, but you do not get any added loss because you save repeatedly. You can save a trillion times and still get the same degradation as if you resaved only once.

Are you sure? I dont think that is the case. Each save will result in slight loss in quality (if the image is changed in any way).

No, Johan is correct. There is quality loss for each Load/Save cycle. If you load an image, then save it several times, without reloading it, there is only one "generation" of quality loss, and no cumulative quality loss for each save. This is because Photoshop re-saves the working copy of the image your are editing, with no reference to the original jpeg image.

The best answer: try it. Open an image, and save it 30 times (use an action key). Do the same thing, only load and save it 30 times. The difference will be obvious, should you choose to experiment.
