I am having one heck of a time with my photo cropping tool. If I try to crop an image at an angle, I get disastrous results. I have created a web page that hopefully explains what is happening quite well.

<http://www.xterrier.com/photoshop/>

Is this an issue with anyone else? I am unsure if it is a photoshop issue or a compatibility issue with my video card.

I am running an Alienware MJ-12 P4 3.2 w 1gig of ram, 240gb main drive, dual sata 120 gb media drive, and 120 gb Mator 1 touch external drive (where I store most media) Extra cooling, and an nVidia Quadro FX 500 128mb. Oh yeah, I run a Wacom Intuos2 (serial) pen tablet.

I tried installing new drivers for my video card and did not have successful results. These were the nVidia Quadro drivers recommended by Adobe.

I then tried another crop and had the same experience.

Very frustrated.

This is not a cure for the strange behaviour you are experiencing but, by doing the job the following way (which I always do), there’s no problem.

1. Use the Measure Tool to define a true horizontal.

2. Use Rotate Canvas -> Arbitrary to align the image to this datum.

3. Use the Crop Tool without any skew to crop the area you want.

This also lets you include "empty corners" which you can fill with the Clone Tool or similar.

Zoom out with the Navigation Palette so that you can see the work area of the image and the image together. Hit the crop tool. Look at the borders of the crop region. Does it extend beyond the canvas?

The blue chair comeing "back" into the image may be the result of having dragged a layer onto a canvas and the canvas is slighly smaller than the image itself.

If this is the case, either increase your canvas or transform the image layer first, then crop.

Peace,
Tony

Nope, I am starting from a flat image and trying to crop an area in the center, no outer regions are being touched. It gets worse if I increase the angle, or god forbid, try to crop almost vertical. I have tried the same on another machine and it works fine. I am guessing at this point it must be a conflict with my Quadro FX 500 card, I guess it could be a motherboard math problem perhaps too? Not sure, frustrated.

OK, tested more.

Works fine when: no vertical or horizontal size is specified.

Distorts image when: either vertical, or horizontal size is specified or when both are specified.

Can I get someone on a P4 machine to test this?

Not working in 7.01 or in CS.

Matt,
I’m using PS7.01.
I have similar problems with rotating the crop tool.
But I notice it depends on what size the crop is.

For a 75pixel sq. crop(I use it for thumbnails) the crop tool does not rotate the cropped image as expected.

But for 750 pixel crops it seems to work fine.

I have settled on using the measure tool to straighten out an image before cropping. -Mike Lynch

Matt,

I just tested in CS on A P4 with a Quatro FX 500 Video card and I didn’t have any problems.

I would say reset your preferences but if you have both CS and PS7 installed on this machine and both are doing the same thing it is unlikely that resetting the preferences will fix the problem. Might be worth a shot though.

It isn’t something simple like the perspective check box is it?

I’m running PS7.01 on a Dell P4, with Windows XP pro, and an ATI Radeon 9600 video card. I had no problems with it at all. It cropped clean, undistorted, and rotated to horizontal. Even tried a tiny crop of just the bowl of popcorn(?). Again, no problems at all.

I’d put my money on the Quadro FX card as the problem.

Ol’ Whozit,

How much money 🙂

(See post 7) I ran a test on a P4 with a Quatro FX 500.

I don’t believe video cards have anything to do with file output anyway. The only thing a video card does is display the content as quickly and efficiently as possible. Meaning that if there is a video card problem you can still save the file and open it on a different computer and everything will look fine.
