I am using Photoshop 6 on Windows XP, and have run into this problem only recently. When I have saved a file (psd, jpeg, whatever), I cannot reopen it and I get a message that the file is locked and that I have to unlock through the properties menu under windows explorer. There is no "unlock" tool under properties in windows explorer!!

This doesn’t happen for all files and it seems to be random…I think.

Has anyone had this experience? What can I do?

Nothing is more frustrating than working on an image, saving it and not being able to open or use it!

Thanks!

Nate

Where is the file located? Hard drive…CD…network?

Have you created (or changed) a new XP user account/profile recently? If so, the files may have been created while logged in with the older profile and XP would see you as a different user – and NOT the "owner" of that file. If this is the case, you can take ownership of the file and XP would then allow you access to it again.

Of course, it could be something completely different as well.

All my files are on the network. Most (99%) are accessible, only a few that I save are "locked".

If they’re coming from a CD, they may have the Read Only attribute set, but one can still open them. If they’re on a network, even if someone else has the file open, you can open it, provided you don’t have Workgroup permissions enabled, and even then, I think you’re prompted for permission.

So I would suspect that there is some process holding on to the file. You might try rebooting and see if the problem goes away. That won’t solve the issue long term, but it is, I would think, a good first step to see if the file is "released" locally.

Peace,
Tony

Edit: It could also be due to a lag in the network. If you’re saving them on the network, there may be something causing a delay, making the file inaccessable temporarily.

If they’re coming from a CD, they may have the Read Only attribute set,

FYI, this doesn’t happen in XP, the read-only attribute is stripped when a file is copied from a CD.

The problem here sounds more like the psicon.dll Explorer problem
