Does anyone know how to turn off the help system in Photoshop 7.0. Recently everytime I work in Photoshop it keeps opening the Adobe Home Page that is promoting the new CS version. This is getting to be such a production problem I am thinking of changing to CorelDraw. Photoshop just keeps opening explorer and everytime I close it the damn thing opens up a new one.

Huh? The help system only comes up when you open it — it doesn’t open automatically.

Actually I’ve seen the same thing happen in PS 7.x and not just once.

Usually it happens after hours of work where I have double clicked on a layer to bring up the Layer Style dialog box several times. Suddenly the help file opens instead of the Layer Style dialog box and when that happens, the only way out is to close Photoshop down and fire it up again.

I’ve never experienced it in PS 6.x or CS. Only in version 7.x.

I have had the same thing happen to me on several occasions, PS 7. It just turns itself on!

It can’t activate itself.

You may hit the "help" key by mistake – but somehow or another you asked the application to open the help.

Chris, I have never lied to you, ever. 🙂 But several days last month the help browser would pop up and everytime I clicked it off, another one popped up in its place. It was sort of like accidently landing on a porno site.

I’ve had the same problem in PS7 under the same conditions that Thomas Madsen described. In fact, often it will open several instances of the browser at the same time. When it happens I often have to close the program and open it again because it won’t let me accomplish anything.

Well I have pretty long piano fingers but I’m quite sure that my right thumb wasn’t touching the F1 key while I double clicked on the left mouse button with my right index finger 🙂

Chris,

It happened to me so much that I no longer ever use it. I put a bookmark in my browser which is always open anyhow.

Peace,

Not looking for a solution, but thought I’d add that this happened to me, too. PSCS. XP Pro.

I had six (or so) browser windows open unexpectedly to PS help just yesterday. (My office mate can vouch for this because I exclaimed loudly!) I could close each browser window without incident, and I did not have to close PS to get back to business.

I had never experienced that behavior before. It hasn’t repeated itself. Definitely did not press F1 six times…

Unfortunately, this DOES happen. It seems to happen when you play around with the color picker to much. It is almost like PS is trying to be your buddy and help you out because you take too long tweaking your color values. Definitely happened with 7.x – I don’t know about CS.

Not a solution, but…

When it happens I often have to close the program and open it again…

If you have this happen and you find that you can no longer click any of your tools and/or palettes (after closing all instances of the help page), rebuild your workspace. You won’t have to restart the program.

Hi Jim,

The reason I often have to close the program is because it won’t stop popping the help windows up at me. When the problem occurs, it will often open five or six Help pages. As soon as I close all of them and click on anything in PS, another five or six Help pages will open again. The process is repeated time after time.

I would like to make an attempt, however, to try what you suggested. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what do you mean by "rebuild your workspace", and how would I do it?

Same here.

I guess Jim means Window > Workspace > Reset Palette Locations or choose your preferred workspace, if you have a saved workspace in the list.
