PhotoShop 5.5
Windows XP
Greetings,
When downloading a photo from the web, sometimes the extension given with it is a .jpeg. Then, with PhotoShop open, attempting to open that image, the selection window of PhotoShop won’t show photos which have the full .jpeg extension. When saving a PhotoShop graphic as a JPEG, it shows JPEG as the ‘name’ of the format, but only .jpg and .jpe as possible extensions. [ie: JPEG(*.jpg, *.jpe) ] I have to go through all the .jpeg’s and delete the ‘e’ in the extension to get PhotoShop to show it in the selection window.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks, -rg-

Photoshop 5.5 would only look at 3 character extensions on Windows.

Ray,

If you have hundreds or thousands of files to rename, use an auto renamer. You can find freeware versions. It will save you tons of time because you can set the extension you want, and rename all the files in a folder in one shot.

You guys are GOOD. Thanks again.

While I’m here,…Do you know of any ‘randomizing’ filter for PS where you can still set some parameters? An example might be the surface of a concrete wall.

Ray,

I collected a bunch great filters a long time ago by searching with Google. Think I used "Free Photoshop filters". Don’t get disappointed if you don’t find what you want right off the bat, and be sure to check the links on the sites that point to other sites. You might try it and see what you get.

…use an auto renamer.

Alternately, right-click on the folder containing the jpeg files and select Open Command Window Here.

At the command prompt, type the following:

ren *.jpeg *.jpg

(There’s a space after ‘ren’ and after ‘jpeg’.)

Then hit Enter.

This will rename all files in that folder with jpeg extensions to the same name but with jpg extensions.

I’m not offered the ‘Open Command Window Here’ option. Get it in the ‘Windows files’ window, or while in PS? I think I’ve seen this before but I can’t find it now.

Hmmm…

Could be an option added by TweakUI for XP.

If you can get to a command window, you can manually navigate to the desired folder by typing…

x: {Enter}

where ‘x’ is the drive letter containing the folder in question, followed by…

cd [foldername]\[foldername] {and so on, then hit Enter}

where [foldername] is the name of the folder, with multiple folders listed in the order of the hierarchy involved. Do not enter the brackets. (‘cd’ stands for change directory.)
