I just bought a Nikon D200 and installed the software that came with it. Now when I open an NEF file the Nikon Raw processor comes up instead of the CS2 Raw processor. The Nikon processor is very limited and I want to get rid of it. How do I do this? I uninstalled it from the Programs list and I uninstalled Nikon Picture Project. I can’t see any Nikon application still resident, have rebooted the PC but it still takes over in CS2.

Nikon also installs a Photoshop plugin. That’s what you see. Go to the Photoshop plugins folder and remove it.

I believe it isn’t always in the plugins folder.
It is likely to have a name like Nikon NEF Plugin.8Bi

I doubt it could be anywhere else (except where the Camera RAW plugin resides). If it’s not in the plugins folder, it shouldn’t interfere with normal Photoshop operation.

I have both NX and CS3 and I’m not sure which I prefer – keep going back and forth.

What makes you say that NX works better? Which tools do you use in particular?

Just by reading the message (not directly to the OP) I can see that the OP doesn’t seem to know the difference between RAW converter and Graphic Editor to begin with. And if he meant Nikon CaptureNX vs ARC then it’s another story, and even I have never seen Nikon Capture I can say that there shouldn’t be much difference or each has some strong/weak point (usually the interface, color, and noise problem).

And to you, if you can’t decide between Nikon CaptureNX vs CS3 then I would suggest you to spend extra time mastering CS3 as CS3 isn’t RAW converter and it’s much more than any current RAW converter. And if you need RAW converter than ARC v4.x (part of CS3) is a good RAW converter.
