How can I create a simple outline from a photo in Photoshop?

This is the kind of outline I want to create

Use the Pen tool to put a path around the object, then stroke the path.

That will work if you have a relatively uncluttered background. In fact you’re going to need an almost blank background for that to work. And it seems like an awfull lot of work for what is in effect a very simple process.

Why not make your life easier? Turn it into a two step process.

Isolate the item you want to add an outline to by masking out and deleting the background on the layer.
Now click Layer>Layer Style>Stroke, and set the colour of your outline and it’s thickness.
Job done.

And if you want to rmove the original artwork from the middle of the outline, that’s oh-so-simple too.
Just go to your layers pallette, and select the layer you added an outline to. Now drag the "fill" slider all the way to the left, and you’ll be left with just an outline.
