Hi,

I am using an Iomega 120GB hardisk connected via Firewire IEEE1394, Pinnacle Studio hardware + original Iomega cables.

The behavior is very strange. Sometimes it works for hours and sometimes not.

Main problem is that Photoshop CS tells me that it can not find the file, when I am trying to save a new named file onto the disk.

My BIOS is the newest as well as all VIA drivers. I have a MSI Motherboard with a AMD 1.4GHz processor and 1.5 GB RAM. Matrox Video Card G55 MDHA32DR working in Dual Monitor mode.

Does anybody work also from a big external harddisk and what are your experiences ?

regards Rainer

Rainer,

I’m using a LaCie 120GB external firewire drive, and for the most part it’s been solid. On a couple of occasions, when I’ve copied a number of large files (like around 5 or 6 GB total), I’ve gotten an error message to the effect that "Windows Explorer must close". However, the files were successfully transferred and Windows continued to function normally after the message. In both cases, I rebooted the machine, just to be on the safe side, but other than that, I’ve had no problems with it.

I have a 120 GB hard drive attached through the firewire and have had a few problems with it getting lost. I have to unplug it wait a couple of seconds and then replug it and it is recognized by the computer again. I am using it as a PS scratch disk and it works most of the time just fine. BTW it is a Western Digital. Since I started leaving my computer on for weeks at a time, I haven’t had this problem however. I reboot every now and then just to clear out the cobwebs that grow.
