Images displayed too darkly in PS CS

I have a properly calibrated monitor, and calibrated printer profiles. All images that I open in CS are displayed way too darkly. They print much lighter than they appear. The prints match the brightness of the image displayed by windows explorer thumbnails or filmstrip preview, and match the brightness of the same image when opened in Corel Photo-Paint 12, or any other application. I shoot in Adobe RGB 1998 and work in that color space (usually). Is there some way to adjust the global brightness of the whole application? As it is now, I have to do all my editing then adjust the brightness down about 30% before printing to get decent results. If I then open the same darkened file in another editing program, the brightness looks fine, and prints accurately. Very bizarre! Any ideas? Thanks.

Joseph,
You describe classic symptoms of needing to recalibrate and profile your monitor with Adobe Gamma or another such utility.

I’d say your monitor profile is bad.
<http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps7-colour/ps7_2.htm> can be a big help with Adobe gamma utility.

Brent,
Thanks for the reply but I don’t think that’s the problem, since I get the correct brightness in every other application, and the display and print results match perfectly in every other application. I calibrate with PANTONE COLORVISION’s OptiCal 3.7, and just did a calibration a few days ago to try to fix this very same problem. Same results, images are displayed correctly in every application EXCEPT Photoshop CS.

Is CS the only color managed app you use ? I’d guess so. You could check it out for sure by using Adobe Gamma to create a profile, and see if it was any better or not . It’s not like there aren’t a percentage of colorimeters that go bad . For awhile, the Spyder had a real bad rep.

Does Optical use a gamma loader like Adobe and Monaco ( I use the Monaco system ) ? Perhaps something is interfering with the LUT loading, like new video drivers ( recall the recent ATI driver problem ).
