ok, heres my situation, im working on a large file, 5000×5000 1000dpi…i am using an image of an animal for a logo and i only need the silhouette of it…the original image is about 200×300 and it was scaled up quite a bit to fit the size…so i get it all cropped out and filled in with black…it looks good at like 16.7%, but when i zoom in to 100% the edges are not smooth…look at what im saying <http://youdontevenknow.cjb.net/screenshots> i just want to smooth out the edges without actually doing it manually, is there a way of doing that? now i understand it is supposed to be a little messy looking becasue it is an animal with lots of fur, but its just a little bit too much, im just looking to smooth it out to make it a little more realistic…i hope i explained myself good enough, thank you for your help 🙂

Your link doesn’t only try to set a lot of cookies and has pop ups, it also attempts to install spyware… nice.

This sounds like a job for MODERATOR-MAN. Please delete that link!

how about a bit of gaus blur or feathering? or make the outline into a path and use smooth path…

Matt,

The first rule to understand is that any view in Photoshop other than 100% is an approximation of the image. That said, it makes perfect sense that when you look at the image from "afar" that you don’t see the detail. It’s like admiring a big city from an airplane, and then when you dine downtown, you see how dirty it is – kind of thing.

So the "trick" if you want to call it that, is to first begin your croping/selecting at 100% only. How you do it depends on the original.

In your case, with that nice black image, there are a couple of things to try – since we don’t know much about it at this point, your success will vary. You MIGHT have to start over, and if you want really, really precise selections, you can use the Pen tool set to Paths. If you go that route and don’t know how to do it, come back and ask.

As for the image at hand – blur the sucker. I mean BLUR it with gaussian blur. Then you can use the magic wand tolerances to smooth the selection. That is, set the tolerance very very low – you’ll have to experiment with the setting. Once’s it’s acceptable, as noted by the marching ants, then you can try different levels of smoothing – different radii.

Another way would be to do the above, and after smoothing, conver the selection to a Path (right click with marquee tool on your selection, covert to path), and the tighten it up with the pen tool.

That’d be my thought anyhow…

Peace,
Tony
