I did a search on sharpening to learn more on doing the sharpening and I found many different techniques. I am now even more confused than before. Could someone tell me the best way to sharpen a portrait of a family member that is just shot by a novice as a snap shot and now I want to make a 8 by 10 photo out of it for the family members. In other words it isn’t done by a professional so maybe doesn’t need to end of being of equal quality. However I do want the best results that I can get.

Choices are:
Surface Blur
Gaussian Blur layer techniques with luminosity and 50% opacity and merge visible
Gaussian Blur on the background layer

Thanks

rdoc,

I don’t know if this is the best way, but this method works for me. You may want to give it a try. When I’m done with all editing and am ready to sharpen the image for printing on an inkjet printer, I first convert the image to Lab mode (if it isn’t already in Lab mode), select the L channel (so that sharpening is applied only to the luminosity and not to any colors), make sure the image is set to be viewed at 100 %, open the Unsharp Mask Filter and use the following settings:

Amount between 100 and 200 (to taste)
Radius = 1
Threshold = 10

Finally, I convert the image back to RGB mode for saving and/or for printing.

Hope this works for you.

Herb

Spraying the same question multiple times or over and over may end up in kill-file faster than getting answer. To me, each command may take months of hard practicing to master, and most of us are not capable of learning so many different techniques at once. So I would say

– You may want to spend more time mastering the same old technique’s over and over and over until you master it/them, while reading other people question/answer during break time to get more idea.

Well, that’s one of the reasons why many old goats have been rooting on many groups just to READ to learn more idea to improve their old techiniques.

– Unlike landscape, animal portrait, art etc.. portraiture of human is very very hard and require lot of detail work. Unless you go for fashion, art etc. style that you can turn the skin-tecture into plastic look, skintone to whatever color you feel like, else human skintone, texture, shape etc. are pretty unique and well known by most people (I say most but not all because not all people pay much attention to small detail of human body).

Back to the main thing, because there is no easy way to explain to new user all detailed work, or the experted users often don’t need all small detail but few simple word to be able to master the technique (because they already mastered other techniques). And like I have mentioned in previous message LAYER and MASK, and you could understand something like

– BLUR is usually not the main part, the part you want to fade away to give more focus to other part. Or BLUR part isn’t a very important part requires all small detail

– And you can use LAYER and MASKING technique to get rid of the BLUR part, or to create main focus point to the main part (part or the whole foreground whatever you work on).

And of course if you have mastered the Erase Tool then you may be able to use Erase Tool instead of Mask, but I prefer Masking because it give the option the Mask/UnMask (or UNDO option). And you can use Layer, Masking on soften and many different styles .. or learn to adapt the same technique to different thing. I would say spending 3-5+ months on Masking and you may never know what you can do with it.

Joel I made a mistake in posting this question and before I got to change it you read it and replied to it. That is ok since your respond really answers different questions so it is good. If you want to see the question that is the correct one please go to the first question in this thread since I modified it or corrected it. Thanks

I just wanna lets you know because many people kill-file billboarding (posting the same message multiple times, or same message to multiple groups etc.) so they don’t have to download and delete the same messages.

I made an error and corrected it as soon as I realized it. Also I posted it and I couldn’t find the post so I reposted it and couldn’t find it. Than I found them and deleted the wrong ones. Hopes this clarifies what occurred.
