Novice Sharpening

I did a search on sharpening to learn more on doing the sharpening and I found many different techniques. I am now even more confused than before. Could someone tell me the best way to sharpen a portrait of a family member that is just shot by a novice as a snap shot and now I want to make a 8 by 10 photo out of it for the family members. In other words it isn’t done by a professional so maybe doesn’t need to end of being of equal quality. However I do want the best results that I can get.

Choices are:
Unsharp Mask on background layer
Unsharp Mask with Layer based sharpening and use of the luminosity blend mode with opacity at 50%, and mode is luminosity and the blend if command Smart sharpening

The results of sharpening depend on the image data. There is no one method that will work in all cases. Therefore the best way of sharpening something is to try the sharpening methods you know of, compare the results and choose the best one. There is also a limit to how much an image can be sharpened. If it’s very blurry to start with you will never get it sharp looking without extensive post work that goes beyond mere filter use.

I agree with you on this one. And that’s the reason why I mentioned to snap the sharp image to begin with so don’t have to depend on the software. And like you mention that some command may only work best with some image (situation) so it’s always better to learn multiple techniques to switch between them or combine multiple techniques to overcome some difficult.
