When using Save As to change format
What file type are you trying to save as?
the resultant file is shown as "format unknown"
Where? In PS File|Open Dialog or in Explorer?
Peace,
Tony
What file extension has the file got?
It is possible that you will find you opened the file as (say) a tiff and saved as a jpg and that you will find the file extension is filename.jpg.tif. In which case Photoshop will attempt to open it as a tiff even though it is in the JPG format.
What file type are you trying to save as?
PSD or JPEG, it makes no difference. The file is actually saved in the desired format, but seems to be without the ID needed for the browser to recognize it. It does not carry the PS icon even though it is a PSD file. In properties it is shown as "format unknown".
What file extension has the file got?
Before saving the ext is jpg; after saving there is no ext.
rename the file in explorer to add back the .jpg extention if you’re sure it’s a jpg.

OK. I typed in .psd and everything worked fine. Nowhere do I find instructions that I need to type in file ext., and I don’t have to with PSE, so can I configure CS so that I don’t have to manually add the extention?
Steven,
There is no setting. For everyone else, PS adds the proper extension. You might try resetting your preferences per the procedure in the FAQ and see if that doesn’t straighten it out.

Tony
Thanks Tony. I’ve tried resetting to no effect. Currently the preference settings in CS and PSE are the same, and PSE works fine. I cannot see why anyone would not want the ext added automatically, or why it is only me and only with CS.
FWIW (nothing really) but i had a similar problem in 7 where it would add extentions… i’d wind up with file names like myimage.jpg.tif.psd
I could never straighten it out. Then one day I reformatted and reinstalled the OS and all applications and all was well again. For that reason, i think these extention problems have something to do with an obscure registry setting. Until you do something drastic like reformatting, you need to be aware of the problem and make sure the proper extention is put on your filename when saving.
Dave, FWIW, I agree. I can live with it and keep looking for a clue.
