web ads are not clear

How can I get a clean clear ad at 180 by 180 pixels for the front page of my website? I bring in normal resolution images with clean type and compose my ad just like in the print world. When I reduce the ad size for Web it is not clean and clear. I tried building the ad at low resolution but that does not seem to help. Any pointers would be appreciated.
