Hi guys,

Need some help with this. I have a picture and I am trying to create a `hole` in the centre This I can do but I want to feather the hole so that it blends into the picture rather than sharp edges. The reason being I am going to insert a pic of my wife in the created hole.

I hope I have explained this ok and it makes sense.

thanks

I saw your posting had no replies, so let me see if I can help. It sounds like you want to use two photographs–one of your wife in the center and the other of something else for the rest. You can do this by using a selection tool, perhaps the Elliptical Marquee tool.
You’ll want both images, the one of your wife and the one soon to get a hole, in different layers of the same file. Your wife’s photo should be beneath the other one. I have no idea what size or resolution you intend to use so experimentation may be in order. You may want to temporarily reduce the opacity of the top layer so you can see through it to help position the "hole" over your wife’s image. You may also want to copy the "hole" layer by dragging it to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette, and turn the eye off just in case you mess up the other one and run out of History states.

Select the Elliptical Marquee tool.
In the "feather" box, type in a value of, say 40 pixels Depending on size and resolution, this may be too much or too little. Make sure the correct layer is selected and use the Marquee tool to make the correct sized "hole."
As long as you’re holding your mouse button down to make the selection, you can move your selection around by pressing the space bar. Holding the Shift key will constrain your selection to a perfect circle, should that be desired.\
Once you have the selection you desire, either press your delete key, press CTRL+X (COMMAND+X on a Mac) or go to EDIT > CLEAR.

You should now have a nice feathered hole that blends with the picture of your wife. Be sure to return the opacity value of the "hole" layer back to 100%.

Hope this helps.

Corey 🙂
