No TWAIN sources in Photoshop 7.0.1

Hello

I have recently reinstalled my Photoshop 7.0.1 and suddenly I can no longer see most of TWAIN sources in the File|Import submenu. In the previous Photoshop 7.0.1 installation I used to see a dedicated TWAIN entry for each scanner that I have connected to my Windows XP machine – Canon FS4000US and Epson Perfection 1660, but now they are both gone. Only one TWAIN source that’s left in the submenu is that Windows XP’s unified TWAIN source (WIA). Does anyone have any idea about how I can restore individual TWAIN entries for each device in Photoshop’s File|Import submenu?

Other TWAIN applications that I have on my machine use the more traditional ‘Select TWAIN Source/Aquire’ approach to TWAIN user interface. And "Select TWAIN Source" dialog lists all individual TWAIN sources without any problems, i.e. I can see three individual TWAIN sources there – Canon, Epson and WIA, which suggests that there are no problems with TWAIN subsystem itself.

I tried to uninstall and reinstall TWAIN drivers for both scanners to no avail.

Best regards,

It was a strange thing but when I "installed" one of the MS XP updates I lost the TWAIN listings too. I tryed with no luck, to reinstall all of the image scanning software. That didn’t do a thing for the TWAIN area. A couple of MS "updates" later, they reappeared. Done any OS updating lately?

Well, I do it all the time through their "Windows Upadte" Web interface. But in my case, as I said in my original message, other imaging software has no problems listing all TWAIN devices and working with them. It is only Photoshop that seems to be unable to enumerate TWAIN devices properly.

Andrey. I have the same problem since I upgraded to PS7. The twain from the original software that came with my scanner works fine. I loaded my SilverFast scanning software which appears on the acquire menu and nothing happens. It worked fine with PS6.1 I have had several people look at it but they cant’t figure out why it won’t work. I’ve sort of given up on it especially since customer support from the company that makes SilverFast just suggested upgrading which would cost more money and at this point in time the upgrade might not be compatible with my Windows 98SE
I hope you find a solution. Roseanne

Photoshop just enumerates through all the TWAIN data sources available just as it has before, only now the sources are put directly in the Import menu instead of requiring you to pick "select source" then pick the source.

If you have Photoshop 6, do you see all the sources there? It used the older method of explicitly picking from the data source manager.

That would be the logical way to do it. However, it appears that there is something else.

I don’t have Photoshop 6, but I have Microsoft Photo Editor from MS Office package installed on my machine, which also has the "Select Source" dialogue. I can see all the sources there.

Marc, IMO Adobe should go back to the way PS6 did it. PS7 takes long enough to boot as it is, the TWAIN enumeration adds 5-10 seconds (and in some cases, much longer).

Rick – if the TWAIN source is working correctly, then enumerating the sources takes less than a quarter second on a PIII 700 Mhz system.

If they aren’t working correctly, then it can take some time.

I’m running just two sources, MagicScan 4.5 and Vistascan 3.1, and even though both work flawlessly from PS7.01, enumeration takes almost ten seconds on a P3-850MHz/SCSI Ultra160 system.

Is there anything I can do to minimize PS7 load times?

Thanks,
RickW

Are the devices for both of those drivers connected?
If not, then one of them could be hanging up looking for the device (which also indicates that it contains some sloppy code).

Since I don’t know which devices you have connected, or which devices those drivers belong to, I can’t narrow down which might be causing the delay. If I recall correctly, both drivers are for Umax scanners – so there could also be some conflict by having both present.

Both drivers are for one Umax 1200S scsi scanner, which is connected but turned off during boot. Termination, cabling etc are correct.

If not, then one of them could be hanging up looking for the device (which also indicates that it contains some sloppy code).

Wouldn’t be a first for Umax.

Both co-exist peacefully, or at least I haven’t run into any other quirks so far.

Rick
