Hi,

(newb alert)

I can resize a layer using Transform, holding down Shift so proportions are correct.

Question – if I cut and paste the layer into a new file, and do Image
Resize – how come the results looks so much better compared to doing
a Transform?

What is the best way to resize a layer and achieve the best quality? Thanks

my mistake – the quality only looked bad in the transformed (resized) while it was still selected. After unselecting, looked fine.

Any of the active transforms will only show position and a very rough idea of the image. when you confirm, then it ‘renders’ at full quality. OTW you’d be waiting for ages for each small adjustment.

Transform and resize use the same mathematics, as specified in Photoshop’s options. My guess is that the image is zoomed, and you are looking at the onscreen preview, which uses a quick and dirty method to resample. Try zooming to 100 percent, and I think you’ll see that the resized images look very close to the same.

One thing you might want to keep in mind as you learn Photoshop:

Do not copy/paste or cut/paste to move a picture from one Photoshop document to another. This is an inefficient way to do it, and wastes memory. All you need to do is use the Move tool to drag the image from one window to another.
