Hi all,

It’s impossible for me to import any 3D (.obj .3ds etc) files into CS3 Extended. It seems that PS is busy importing, but the results are only a transparent desktop image layer of PS itself. Is this a known bug?

Well, on my HD. 😉
I work a lot with progz like Poser, Bryce, Vue etc. and have a huge library of 3D files in several formats. Mostly .obj or .3ds. PS CS3 Extended should import those 3D files correctly, but it doesn’t. Like I wrote before, the only thing it shows after importing is an image of the PS desktop itself. I tried both "New Layer from 3D File" and "Open File" with the same result.

I did a Google on that and discovered that there are more people experiencing this, but found no solution yet.

I have to admit I find the 3d features in PS-E very… unreliable. So much so we gave up using them. We don’t do a lot of 3D work thankfully, but when we do, we won’t use PhotoShop for it. On my Mac, it usually results in corrupt images of incomplete models. Fairly useless in other words.

Well what I’m thinking is if the 3d wasn’t created by PS that could be the problem. Even JPG’s have different formats to a small degree from one program to the next. ie: Just a missing byte or two and you shift the entire JPG image to the left. I would say view 2 different files in Hex and see if there’s a big visible difference in the headers. create a file and save it as 3d with PS, and do a side by side compare of headers.

Cornell,
It works for me, so it’s not a bug. A simple 3D part as .3ds & .u3d opens, but the same file as .obj fails (opens blank as you described). Did you try as .u3d? (XP Home Edition, SP2)

Cindy

Thnx for replying, Cindy, but even .3ds fails to open correctly here. I haven’t tried .u3d simple because I’m not familiar to that format. Most of my 3D files are .obj and .3ds.

Well according to google, at least the 1st 2 page searches, you are the ONLY person that even has a 3d file on hand. Which might explain the problem.

Back to my original suggestion. Create your own 3d file in PS. then save and try to reload it.

Cornell,
I was unfamiliar with .u3d also, but since this was an importable option, I gave it a try…and it worked!

If any of your software (Poser 7?) can save as .u3d, it may be worth a try. Regards,

That didn’t work either, but the problem is solved for now. Under Preferences/Performance I disabled 3D Acceleration and had no problem importing .obj and .3ds files anymore.

My original question still stands. According to google, you’re the only person on the web that even has a 3ds file. Where can I find one ?? —

(you have to register first, but its free)

or:
