I took some pics about a week ago and have downloaded them to my comp, on looking at then the majoruty are great focus wise but there are a couple that my hand must have either moved slightly or my hand must have been shaking slightly as i took the picture and as a result these seem to be a bit distorted looking "motion wise" on pic. is there any way to sharpen these up or split the pic into layers as to be able to re situate one layer on top of other so the picture looks sharp or totallt remove the blurred or motion look on the pic..

Thank you in advance

Sadly, motion blur is all but impossible to remove effectively.

There are a couple of bodge-it fixes you can try, but there’s always a trade-off. Normally that the resolution of your image drops dramatically.

If you have a reasonably focused picture with just one or two items streaking with motion blur, then yuo can maybe get away with using the clone tool.

But more often than not, this won’t work.
You’re more likely to find that most of the items in your image suffer from motion blur, and have taken on a *streak* effect.

In this case, take your image, and then copy it entirely into a new layer, so you have two identical layers one above the other.

Now, reduce the opacity of the upper layer to 60%, and using the *move tool*, shunt that layer by a few pixels in a direction 90 degrees to the direction of the motion blur.
The idea behind this is that you’re fattening up the blur streaks. The distance you have to move it is a judgement thing and will vary depending on how extreme your motion blur is.

Once you’ve done that, flatten the layers.

Now, go into Image>Image Size, and reduce the width and height to about a quarter of their current sizes.
Now finally, go into your filters and apply a sharpening filter.

Warning, this will seriously reduce the size of your final image, so it won’t print as large, but that’s the trade-off for forgetting to use a tripod 🙂
Also, please be aware. This won’t remove the motion blur. All it will do is make the effects less obvious.

Have you tried smart sharpen > motion blur to see if this helps?

Thank you both Fat Sam & Bob for your tips… I’ll try both of them.

I haven’t actually tried this program, but I have seen the homepage on the web for a program called UNSHAKE. If you want to have a look, here is the home page:

http://www.hamangia.freeserve.co.uk/index2.html

As far as I can tell it is a free program, but does not have all the bells and whistles we expect of commercial programs. If you do try it I’d be interested in how well it works.
