I have several 60 – 100 + year old family photos that I want to have digitally restored. Of course there are local shops and "experts", but I’m wondering if anyone knows if there’s national "A list" of restoration experts that I can consider for hire ?

Thanks

Isn’t alt.graphics.photoshop the A List?

Why not learn to do it yourself? If I was hired to do this based on my hourly it would run about $12,000.

"Several" is usually less than 10 … so you charge $1,200 per pic (or more)?

"akphotog" found these unused words:

This way you can have a look at the individual work of the members to see what it is like!
and then ask if anyone would be willing to take on your photos!! Problem is that it is a time consuming job! and although I am a member of that group, I would personally not consider such a request, simply because of the time involved!
Unless in the unlikely event that all the images need the same sort of restoration and an action could be devised once one image had been successfully improved!!

Hello,

I have experience with restoration of photographs. Past projects have seen me take black and white, damaged photographs and restore them and then COLOUR them, and clients have been extremely happy with the outcome.

What we do is take a high resolution scan of your photograph and then import it into Photoshop. From there, we digital tweak and restore your photograph and then we can re-print it for you on photographic paper.

If you wish to e-mail me about your photographs, then you can do so at and we can talk from there if you want. In the
meantime, you can check out my portfolio site at www.mcbstudios.co.uk, which contains examples of my web design, graphic design, and other digital media design work.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,

It’s been pointed out before, but OP has "several" pictures. This could mean six pictures, more or less. The age of each picture is between 60 and 100 years-old. It’s not a particularly daunting task.

"Several" is usually used to mean a number countable on the fingers of both hands. Toes may be required, though.

Quite right Tony!!

I had misread the entry as 60 photographs!!
Several does indeed throw a different light on things! and I am sure there are quite a number of skilled restorers on the Flickr site who would give him a more than reasonable quote for restoration work! myself included!!

I would say *if* the OP is a Photoshop user then s/he should learn how to do it him/herself. It can be complicated if doesn’t know how, but can be very easy if knowing some basic of Photoshop.

It was one of my first projects when I was learning Photoshop (I am still learning but more of mastering it) and it was around a decade or so ago. Few years ago, I was still reading/responding to few retouching forums and we showed (I believe other still do) newbie lot of technique.

And as usual, I would rather to show them the technique than serving them by fixing some damaged photos for them while they won’t learn anything.

Since the OP asked for guidelines in where to send the photos, and not guidelines on how to restore the photos, I have to assume they are not a Photoshop user.

Not everyone is interested in putting in the time to learn Photoshop. That doesn’t mean that they are not interested in what Photoshop can do in the hands of an experienced user.

If the OP is somewhat interested, I’d suggest purchasing Elements 5.0 and using his photographs as a project learning tool. That’s a more reasonably priced entry tool for the person who has one project in mind.

Going from zero experience to Photoshop is quite a task. It’s also a task that requires start-up expense that doesn’t end with the cost of the program. A computer upgrade may also be needed.

Scan your photos, put the full size images up on the web somewhere, and come back here and tell us where they are.

After folks look at them and see what the problems are, they’ll be in better shape to advise you and offer their services. There are probably hundreds of readers of this group who could do what you need.

There’s a fair chance a few readers will grab one of your photos and restore it just for fun, and to try out and expand their Photoshop skills, and send you a much improved image for free.

There may also be several professionals who might consider doing a bit of one image as an audition, or show you previous work, and make you an offer for their services.

Then you can send the restored files over to Walgreens or a dozen other places, and get top-quality prints, starting at under 20 cents for 4 by 6.

I read what the OP said, but since I don’t have any other info so I lets you share it with the OP.

That’s what you need to give the information to the OP not to correct me.

My "IF" isn’t good for you, but your IF" is pretty sweet to my ear <bg>

I usually start *after* washing my hands if they are begrimed.

It seems like both of our IFs doesn’t do the OP any good, as well as the OP dropped a bomd here then vanished for good <bg>
