Hi,

Please excuse my poor English. I will try my best in converting the problem I encounter.

I am trying to draw a chart and face two problems.

(1) I use the "rectangle tool" to draw boxes, but the boxes doesn’t show after I converting into a jpeg image. The boxes also disappear when I move to another layer.

(2) I use the line tool to draw the connecting line, but some of them is thick, some of them is thin, how do I standised them ?

Hope you all can understand what I meant and can help me solve the problem.

Thank you so much inadvance.

You could try using the rectangle marquee tool. Make the box you want and go edit-> stroke. There you can set size and color etc. Now that you have a box and assuming they are all the same size. Swich to the move tool (black arrow) hold down the alt key and move the cursor over the box, when you see two arrows appear, click and drag and you’ve just made a copy.

As far as the lines go, you could use the paintbrush and set the size of the brush. Hold shift to make straight lines.

Hope that helps and I’m sure there will be more ideas heading your way.

Hi Ken, thank you so much ! I tried it and it works, but I aml not able to move the layer as it stated that it is locked, I also cannot resize it, for both the box and line. Is there other way that you can still edit them, i.e move them around and resize them ?? Thank you again !

It would be much better, easier, and faster to complete your box chart using vector graphics rather than raster because vector will allow you to resize the boxes and lines of your chart without any image quality loss. Once satisfied with your layout you can then convert the image to a raster so it can be saved to .jpg as you indicated you wanted for the final file format. Photoshop 7 is still very limited in its vector capabilities so you might want to consider Xara X, a very capable vector program that is cost effective, and user friendly, or if you want the best of both the raster and vector world in an easy to use, cost effective package get Paint Shop Pro 8 (or even PSP 7 which if you can still get in a store will be a huge bargain). Both of these software applications have trials that you can download.

Xara http://www.xara.com
Jasc’s Paint Shop Pro 8 http://www.jasc.com
Adobe has Illustrator http://www.adobe.com, but it is pricy for what you get.

Take care,
Linda.

oh dear !! Mmmmmm……… waht is raster and what is vector ?? I am pretty new in this software, I just got this job and the previous girl that did the chart just past them down for me to edit, so I have no guide and have to play around and figure it out myself.

I heard that I can draw the box using illustrator and copy and paste onto the photoshop which I did and work, but the problem is when I resize the box, the line will become bigger if I enlarge the box and the line become thinner when it is smaller. But, I want to standardise the thickness of the line for all the different size of box, but dun know how ?? Any suggestion ?

Thank you !!

Raster: file description by pixel. I.e. the file contains a description of the image pixel by pixel. So, for example, if you make the image larger, you tend to see the pixels.

Vector: mathematical file description. The image is described by mathematical positioning and becomes resolution independent. So, no matter whether the image is made smaller or larger it "looks" the same. I.e. you don’t get "pixellation".

I’ve made that as simple as I can. Hope it helps.

I see Hecafe already answered vector vs raster for you. If you need the technical detail just do a search on google.com for "raster vs vector" (include quote marks) and you will get a lot of good reading. Also reverse the search to "vector vs raster" for even more.

I am not sure why you are using PS at all. If you have Illustrator why not just do the whole chart in it? Seems to me you could do your chart, save the empty as a template for future uses, fill the chart and then export it.

One suggestion is to take a course or buy a really good book if your job is going to require you to use Illustrator and PS more often. Both have a fairly high learning curve and stumbling through on your own will likley be a hair raising experience.

Take care,
Linda.
