I’m pretty new to Photoshop. Why is it that I can create a new layer on some photos when I open them up and others are locked. I can’t seem to find a way to unlock them. Help!

Robert,

The simple rule to remember is that a layer called Background, is always locked. To unlock it you must change the name, and the easiest way to do that is to Alt-Double Click on the layer; it will automatically be renamed to Layer0 and will be unlocked.

When you create a New image (File|New), setting your background to Transparent results in an UNlocked "layer 1".

Peace,
Tony
