Talking about reading. a university teacher told me once a brain is like a storage silo. You can only pull out what you but in.

Funny question, because it is so easy simply to look at the magazine at bookstalls and decide for yourself. Why would you depend on what we say? Why don’t you simply look at the magazine, even on Internet and only buy the editions you are interested in. Some of you guys ask funny questions – maybe only want to be heard.

Good…! That’s what I said… you will supply the answer yourself..! You will find the (any..!) magazine just as annoying, so don’t waste you money.

The magazine and energy you need is to join some web forum to LOOK to learn from other photographer (or camera users whatever you want to call), and with an opened mind you should be able to learn much more than any magazine can sell you.

Another good magazine is free magazine from store like JC-Penny which often has good quality photo that you can learn by looking (studying the photos) which is often better than photo (I am talking about printing quality) you see on most photographer/photography books.

Or those may not give you the best color, lighting etc.. but those photos taken by professional so many of them do have some value we can learn from. (Also, it’s an example when comparing to other poor printing quality)

I don’t know exactly where you live in the real world, but here I can see that we are living in the Internet World which has much more usuful information than we can be able to take.

First, you may need to learn to put anything relates to "computer" aside, but focus on the "information" and how much you can benefit from it. And especially graphic computer can give you much much much more information than graphic printed on paper.

– Don’t waste your time on low-rez image

– If you want to explore whatever image you run into in internet, then download (if possible) then ZOOM IN to learn the strong/weak point of the image.

– Learn the difference between displaying vs printing. What I mean that some quick trick for displaying may not suite for printing.

IOW, English isn’t my native language but it can’t stop me from learning by studying the image.

I’ve always looked at that magazine myself, though never bought a copy. It seems heavily biased towards "art" if that makes much sense, ( I shall ignore the usual trolls). Generally my opinion is that if you are a good painter/drawer etc then it’ll be of more interest. There’s usually something quite good re: editing photos, but not enough to justify it’s high price IMO.

If you are in the UK or can get it "Digital Photo" is worth a look. I also like "Digital Camera"

both have video tutorials each month

I am an amateur photographer, leaning toward trying to make enough from it to pay for the toys involved. I do subscribe to the magazine, actually, I joined the National Association of Photoshop Professionals and get the magazine from that. The magazine is heavy to artwork, but also has a lot for photographers. The section on Lightroom is great and I use a lot of their ideas from there. Even for a serious amateur, NAPP membership offers a lot. From discounts at several vendors and training, to hundreds of online videos showing everything from serious artwork, to how to clone out a spot on your image. I’d recommend picking up a couple copies to see if it’s right for you, but it offers a lot of high quality ideas that will really raise your photography skills.

Hi

You can access a lot of the tutorials via Google that will show you how the guys work, also Photoshop TV is another useful vehicle from the same team. I have been trying to get someone to send me a copy of the Layers magazine that seems to be similar. Best of luck

Layers is from the same people, it just covers "all things Adobe"

Wonder whether the OP ever came back here, but if.. thanks for telling. I downloaded one version and like it. It will be one of the considered magazines at the bookstall when I buy mags.
Only keep in mind what you like doing in PS.

If you live near a Borders or a Barnes & Noble bookstore you can generally buy a cup of coffee and browse through any of these magazines. Actually reading the hard copies gives you a better idea of what you may want to subscribe to.

What pain. It’s only about US$75 to join NAPP for what, 2 years(?) and the mag, alone, is worth the $.

They magazine is very good. However, I don’t think it is right to make someone join a club who’s only useful benefit at least for me is the magazine. A lot of the other stuff they offer isn’t of much value so $100 for a year member for the magazine isn’t worth it. What I do instead since it is a 6 issue a year magazine is I go to my local Borders book store every two months and buy the new issue for $9.95. That is less than $60 for the year subscription instead of $100. If you can use the other stuff you get with the NAPP membership then great.

I agree, if you only want the magazine, save $40 a year and buy it at the local book store. If on the other hand, you want access to the very large library of training materials, discounts on a wide variety of photography and Photoshop items, discounts on some of the best Photoshop seminars available, the extra $40 isn’t bad. I’ve save that and more with the discounts on items I was going to buy anyway. The first year I belonged to NAPP, I figured out that with those discounts, my membership "paid me" $150.
