Dear ng,
from my digital camera I transferred some jpg-images to my PC, unfortunately some with ‘red eyes’ problem … I am looking for some suggestions on how to remove this using photoshop.

I would try using the elliptical marquee tool and make a selection around the red part of one eye. You might want to add a tiny bit of feathering to soften the edges, so before you begin, enter a feathering value in the feather field. You can also add feathering after you’ve made the selection by going to Select > Feather or press ALT+CTRL+D. Hold the shift key and make another selection around the red part of the other eye. As long as you’re holding down your mouse key, you can move the selection around by also holding the space bar.

Then go to Image > Adjust > Color balance and reduce the amount of red. Then maybe adjust the levels or brightness/contrast also under Image > Adjust. You’ll probably be trying to get close to the normal black color of pupils since the red is really just the blood inside the eye being lit up by the flash.

If the color still doesn’t look right, you can add another layer above the photo and fill the two selections with black. Adjusting the opacity of that layer will give it a more realistic look.

Too bad Photoshop doesn’t have a Visine tool.:-)

The quickest and easiest way to remove red eye is to use the desideration tool. Grouped with burn and dodge tools, it’s a sponge. Once you select the tool, look at the top and make and make sure the sponge is on DESIDERATE instead of SATURATE. Zoom in so you don’t reduce color in areas you want to preserve. I always set the opacity on the tool at 50% so you can slowly reduce the red. Just keep rubbing until the red is out.
