where can I find a nice transparent font I can use in Photoshop? I want the background picture to be seen in the middle of the letters but clearly distinguish the borders of the letters from the picture. thank you

posted this in reply to the "watermark" question. is this what you are looking to do?

how about this:

add a new text layer, I find a thick text works best. I used "elephant"

type your text in on top of your image

on the layer style, click on

bevel / emboss
contour
and drop shadow.

very important. on the very top of the layer styles window, before you click "OK" on the right to accept your choices, click on the very top option on the left that says "blending options"

in this, make sure that the "blend mode" is set to "normal" and the opacity is 100%. below that in the advanced blending box, lower the "fill opacity" to ZERO. that should do it. I made mine into an action so I can run it on a group of photographs.

hope that helps!

thank you for your reply.
I did not ask any watermark question, nor did I look for one. I was merely looking for a hollow system font, to incorporate in a Photoshop-edited picture.
I intended the picture – together with some text – to become a cover for a book.
I managed to find one hollow font called Babylone5 Hollow True Type and was very pleased with it being transparent in the middle of the letters, so some of the picture is still not covered by the text.

so what you *really* wanted was an outline font? I’m glad you found what you were looking for!

yes. I probably did not express myself clearly in the original question.

Ruth,
I found this answer to be very helpful for me. I will be using it for a watermark type situation. I had never experimented with actions, but figured out how to make one for the watermark.
Thanks for you help,
Jack

I got that you’ve found a good answer, but I would have typed what I wanted into a selection channel in white type with a blackground. Then gone back to the pic and selected from that channel and stroked the font outline. You should be able to do that with any font.

could you please send me an email explaining me how to do this? I would much appreciate it because I am not familiar with working with channels.

Are you trying to paste an image into the shape of the text? If yes, then select the entire background layer and copy (CTRL+C). Then switch to the text layer and, using your Magic Wand tool with "contiguous" unchecked, select all the text by clicking on one of the letters. Then go to EDIT > PASTE INTO (SHFT+CTRL+V). The background image will be pasted into the text automatically by use of a layer mask. Then you can add a bevel, emboss or drop shadow to the text to make it more distinguishable.

You can even move the picture around INSIDE the text if desired, to allow different parts to show through. Linking the layer mask to the layer image will prevent this.

Corey 🙂
