How do you "unregister" a .dll, Dave?

using a program called regsvr32.exe.

it should be in the win\system32 folder… if not you can find it here:

regsvr33 at MS < http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://suppor t.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q267/2/79.ASP&NoW ebContent=1>

from start> run type

regsvr32 /u dllname.dll

replace dllname.dll with the dll to unregister.

It seems that the people having the most problems with SP2 are the ones without clean installs.

I don’t think it’s that simple, Bob. I’ve recently done two SP2 updates on XP Pro machines that were upgraded from Win98SE — complete with registries the size of Buicks. No problems with either; in fact, there were noticeable performance increases all around.

I know a number of people with clean XP installs that are having a hell of a time with SP2.

Without seeing a lot more data, I would not jump to that conclusion.

It was an observation, not a conclusion. Thanks for your input, good to know.

Supposedly these were clean installs at the beginning of the semester when we reimaged the machines. Last semester before SP2 everything was running fine! A lot of you guys helped me find the ghost problem and when we removed Ghost Client (and a few resident spirits of old IT personnel,) we were golden.

Since SP2 these machines have become completely unreliable and our failures are coming in weird places. Opening Classroom in a Book CD’s causes immediate aiicon.dll errors and we are having trouble removing flash drives (the preferred method of backup for students in our lab because we got kicked off the network for "hogging" all the space.

I noticed the thumbnail problem right away! I thought I had turned off all the Windows eyecandy when I installed the Creative Suite, but for some reason we still get the thumbnails on all files, even those I have saved out of PSCS with no thumbnail preview!

Even when I drag these files home, the thumbnail preview icons are resident, and I know that they are turned off on my machine…

We are also experiencing the "can not delete files–another application is using etc." so I had hoped by renaming the aiicon and psicon files would help. I know a registry hack is not going to fly with IT, because we have some really inexperienced individuals running the department who don’t know what they are doing.

So I have turned to my unofficial IT department for help! You guys don’t know how much my students appreciate all of your advice to keep our computers up and running but they do! Without your help and guidance, we would still have Ghost Client and Citrix running on these machines and my students wouldn’t be able to get anything done!

So any creative ideas you come up with let me know! Dave I am going to try your solution tomorrow (especially if they take off the deep freeze and leave me alone in the room…if not I can rename the files but hacking the registry will be out!)

Thanks for all your help and any other ideas will be greatly appreciated!

that’s not hacking the registry (regsvr32) that’s what you do when you DON’T want to hack the registry. 🙂
