Here’s a tip from another photographer:

While in File Browser and clicking on the folder you want to work in, click File, Export Cache – this is in the File Browser menu NOT
the main PS menu. Do this on all your folders you have images in. Then while still in File Browser click File, Purge Entire Cache. This should allow the file browser to work more quickly. As I understand it what exporting the cache does is to write 3 files inside the folder with thumbnails & preview files ready for PS to pull up. This way PS does not need to reprocess the files in the file browser every time it opens a folder.

This seems to help a great deal. I’m now trying to remember to Export Cache everytime I make a new folder or change the contents of an existing one. When burning CDs, include the 3 files that are generated and the browser will be able to read the CD much faster.

Seems your work is picture management. But mine is graphic design. Content of my project folders is undergoing change, content of my clipart folder too: I’m removing used cliparts to prevents reuse and adding brand new picture there. File Browser is good for archiving pictures. For galloping and huge work is VERY BAD thing.
