Can anyone help?
I have a Canon ip4500 printer
PS CS3
OS Vista
When I try to print a B&W image it comes out sepia!
I’ve desaturated the image & have also converted it to greyscale, the results are the same – sepia!.
I’ve matched both the colour profies to Adobe1998, I’ve had the printer manage colour & had Photoshop manage colour. The results are the same – sepia prints!
I contacted Canon & printed some test pages which came out fine. I must be doing something wrong somewhere, but what?

Any help is appreciated

Remove the colour cartridge and try.
Many Canons will run just fine with just the Black installed. You -=may=- (or may not!) have a utility for the priter that sets the balance for proper grey scale. – Whatever, it’s the printer that’s doing this – especially as you’ve set to greyscale (NO colour information!).

Thanks for that, but changing the mode to greyscale was a last resort to find out if I could print B&W.
Yes my printer does have a box to tick to print greyscale – same result. I also have 3 colour cartridges.

I normally open an image, duplicate it, desaturate the top layer then erase part of the that layer to show
part of the colour layer below. The colour is fine but not the desaturated top layer. Sepia.

The Canon printers do not use any color when greyscale is ticked. The fact that you’re printing in sepia makes me think that there is something wrong with the black cartridge you are using. That cartridge is usually a double wide cartridge. Is it a Canon or a refill? You might want to try a different cartridge.

Thanks Larry,

The printer is only 1 week old & all cartridges are the ones supplied by Canon. As I said previously I did contact Canon & printed a test page & some text from a word document. They were all OK.

Try flattening all your layers etc. and then try printing it out.

I have never own any Canon inkjet, and haven’t done any print with inkjet for so many years to know what’s going on in the inkjet printing world. But years ago, there were some companies selling some type of grey-scale ink for many different inkjet printer. Or if you want to print B&W then just replace the color cartridge with their special cartridge.

I guess they are still available these days, so you may want to GOOGLE for them.

Alot of printers especially dye printers have problems with b&w. Usually switching to black only solves this, but black ink only on a 8bit picture only gives 256 shades of grey. This is why higher end printers are now using multiple black inks. The best thing to do is to try to find a setting that neutralizes the sepia. Unfortunately this may be trial and error.
